LFS Lesson Plan
Unit EQ: Why is it important for you to be "digitally literate"?
LEQ: How can understanding the significance of a domain name help you evaluate websites?
Activating Strategies:
Tell students that they are going to learn today about one of the ways to tell if a site is factual or fictional.

Ask students to identify the 6 people/places/symbols on the first slide of the PPT. Ask them to infer the domain name for each of these people/places/symbols. Tell them that the goal of a domain name is to describe what the website will be about. Domain names should be recognizable, just like the people/places/symbols are.
Acceleration/Previewing/Vocabulary:

Teaching Strategies and Distributed Guided Practice/Summarizing Prompts:
  1. Share facts about domain names in PPT.
  2. Explain assignment: students are to create their own personal domain name and then check www.register.com to make sure it hasn't already been taken.
  3. Domains Explained: http://www.smccd.net/accounts/webready/lesson11_web.asp
  4. more domain name info: http://www.library.jhu.edu/researchhelp/general/evaluating/url.html
Summarizing Strategies:
Students submit their new personal domain names as a comment for their respective teachers. Domain names can then be shared with the rest of the class.
